Bordeaux region: a symphony of grapes and terroirs
The Bordeaux region, located in the south-west of France, is world-renowned for the quality and variety of its wines. With a temperate climate influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, Bordeaux offers ideal conditions for viticulture. The region is divided into several subregions, each with distinctive characteristics, such as the Médoc, Graves, Saint-Émilion, and Pomerol.
The soils of Bordeaux are extremely varied, including gravel, clay, sand and limestone – each contributing to the complexity of the wines. The main grape varieties grown include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot for red wines, and Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle for whites.
Bordeaux is especially famous for its red wines, which tend to be full-bodied and structured, with good aging potential. White wines, on the other hand, are appreciated for their freshness and complexity.
Furthermore, Bordeaux is home to the prestigious sweet wine of Sauternes, known for its richness and sweetness resulting from botrytis cinerea, a noble rot that concentrates the sugars of the grape.
The region is home to numerous historic châteaux, each with its own tradition and style of production, contributing to Bordeaux’s reputation as one of the world’s wine capitals.
