Merlot: the versatile star of viticulture.
The Merlot grape is one of the most widespread and appreciated grape varieties in the world of viticulture, known for its distinctive characteristics that make it suitable for a wide range of wines.
Originally from the Bordeaux region of France, Merlot has spread to many other wine regions around the world, including Italy, the United States, Chile and Australia.
Merlot berries are generally medium-sized, with a thin skin and blue-black in color. This characteristic gives Merlot wines a softer tannin than other red grape varieties.
Wines produced with Merlot grapes are typically soft, velvety and round, with a balanced structure and a medium-full body.
The aromatic profile of Merlot is rich and complex, with predominant notes of red and black fruits, such as cherry, blackberry and plum. Often, hints of aromatic herbs, cocoa, tobacco and vanilla also emerge, especially if the wine is aged in oak barrels.
Thanks to its versatility, Merlot is used both for the production of monovarietal and blended wines, often combined with other grapes (such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) to create the famous Bordeaux wines.
