Unveiling Mourvedre: from Mediterranean areas to the world’s vineyards.
The Mourvedre grape, also known as Monastrell in Spain and Mataro in Australia and California, is a black vine variety highly prized for producing robust, complex red wines. Originally from Spain, this variety is particularly widespread in the Valencia region and in the Mediterranean areas.
The main characteristics of Mourvedre include a high tannin content and medium acidity, which give the wines structure and longevity.
Wines produced with this grape are known for their intense and distinctive aromas, which range from black fruits such as blackberry and plum, to spicy notes of black pepper, to earthy and leathery hints. Often, Mourvedre wines also feature floral nuances of violet and an animalic character that can be reminiscent of game.
Mourvedre is often used in blends, particularly with Grenache and Syrah, to create some of the most famous wines from the south of France.
Thanks to its ability to ripen slowly, this variety prefers hot, dry climates, where it can fully develop its aromatic complexity and concentration of flavors.
