Côtes du Rhône: a journey through France’s historic wine terroir.
The Côtes du Rhône wine region is one of the oldest and most renowned in France.
Famous for the variety and quality of its wines, a reflection of the rich winemaking tradition and the diversity of the terroirs that compose it, it is located in the Rhône valley, in the south-east of French territory.
The distinctive characteristics of Côtes du Rhône wines derive from its main grape varieties: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre for the reds, and Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier for the whites. The reds are known for their robust structure, rich in aromas of red fruits and spices, with notes of Provençal herbs and, in some cases, nuances of black pepper; while the white wines offer freshness and complexity, with hints of white pulp fruit, flowers and citrus fruits.
The Mediterranean climate, influenced by the Mistral (a cold, dry wind that blows from the north), determines hot, dry summers and mild winters: this contributes to the reduction of humidity and plant diseases.
The Côtes du Rhône appellation is divided into two main categories: Côtes du Rhône AOC, which represents the entire region and offers good quality wines at affordable prices, and Côtes du Rhône Villages, which includes wines from specific villages known for their superior quality and distinctive character.
