Chartou Keresztúr Tokaji Late Harvest is a naturally sweet white wine that is harvested “late”, at the end of October instead of in September, to allow the grapes to ripen to their fullest to produce a more luxurious sweetness.
The wines hailing from the Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region, which spans modern-day Hungary and sloping into Slovakia, were once globally renowned. Such wines, wines like Keresztur 2022, have a deep-rooted Jewish heritage and were greatly sought after by the royal courts of Europe and beyond. Prior to the events of WWII, some of the finest vineyards in Tokaj were under Jewish ownership. The sweet wines of Tokaji have achieved particular acclaim, owed largely to the presence of a specific fruit fungus known as botrytis, or “noble rot.” This fungus enhances the sweetness of the grapes and imparts a unique flavor complexity. The grapes affected by botrytis, known as Aszú berries in Hungary, are meticulously selected during the harvesting process for the production of Tokaji. Given the slow and inconsistent development of the rot, the challenging harvest, and the reduced liquid content within each usable grape, yields are meager and the production process is typically costly.
The grapes for Keresztúr Tokaji Late Harvest are selectively picked late in the season, ensuring optimal ripeness and concentration.
